Bulgarian (vulgarian) "Indian"

Went to IFFI yesterday. Saw a Bulgarian film called "Podslon/Shelter" by Dragomir Sholev. Film was about a 12-year-old boy who is infatuated by his teenage punk friends and how his parents deal with him. Interestingly, when the father abuses the punks - he describes them as "Indians". This, of course, startles our very Indian audience. I assume "Indian" as a cuss word has something to do with Gypsies travelling from India across Europe. From what I've read, not much gypsy love in Europe (except for Johnny Depp in Chocolat). Anybody know if I'm right?
